Are We Becoming a Nation of Renters?

Data across Canada and the US show that home ownership rates among millennials (adults 18 to 35 years old) has dropped to a 20 year low. The reasons include low rates of marriage (a driver of home ownership), high prices, and lingering effects of the recession.

Does that mean our youngest millennials are doomed to miss out on the intrinsic value of owning their own home? Probably not. In my opinion, between flattening home prices, rising rents, and growing families, even millennials will soon be sinking down roots in a home of their own.

Rather than assuming that renting is the better option, contact me for a consultation for yourself or someone you know. Let’s see what’s possible before giving up on the dream of owning.

Get a Bigger Bang for Your Halloween Decorating Budget

Here are three ideas that take up a lot of space, giving your yard a more "full" feeling without spending a ton of money on huge commercial inflatables and plastic skeletons:
  • Buy inexpensive strobe lights, orange string lights, and spot lights to add dimension to your decorations at night. You can cover a lot of empty space with a $10 string of lights, and give your yard or entry more of an ethereal feel. Replace your porch light bulb with a black light. Stick glow in the dark spiders and webs to the wall near the light.
  • Sit two rolled sleeping bags on top of each other end-to-end in a chair, then drape with a sheet. Put a hat on top. If you feel adventurous, you can light up the inside using a strobe or shine a blacklight spotlight on it.
  • Take two sticks of different length and make a cross, hammering, screwing, or wiring them together at the joint. Then drape the frame with a sheet or an old tattered coat. You can stuff a pillow case and paint a face on for the head, or attach a pumpkin. Prop your scarecrow (or better yet, multiple scarecrows) in the yard.

A Bad Son Makes Good

An old man lived alone. He wanted to prepare his potato garden, but it was hard work. His only son (who would have helped him) was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and complained about his situation:

Dear Son,
I am feeling pretty bad because I won’t be able to plant my potato garden this year. I hate to miss doing the garden, because your mother always loved planting time. I’m getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, all my troubles would be over. I know you would dig for me, if you weren’t in prison.
Love, Dad

While he was out in the fields, the old man received an urgent phone message back from his son, who said: “For Heaven’s sake, Dad, don’t dig up the garden! That’s where I buried the GUNS!”

At 6:00 the next morning, a dozen agents and local police officers arrived and dug up the entire garden without finding any guns.

Confused, the old man wrote another note to his son telling him what happened, and asking what to do next. His son called back and said: “Go ahead and plant your potatoes, Dad. It’s the best I could do for you from here.”
